Medical conditions, allergies medication in school.
It is important that you inform the school office if your child has any serious medical conditions or allergies giving as much information as possible. It is also important that you keep us updated on changes so that we can keep out records up to date.
Inhalers and Epipens.
- If your child has, or develops, asthma or any complaint that requires an inhaler please inform the school and give us as much detail as possible.
- All inhalers are stored in the school office in clearly marked boxes so that the children and adults know where to come if they are needed. They should be delivered to school clearly marked with the child’s name and instructions relating to use and doseage. For some children it might be appropriate for additional inhalers in the classroom.
- Where a child requires an Epipen a Care Plan will be in place and a copy of this should be given to school along with 2 epipens. Epipens are stored in the school office in red boxes clearly marked with the child’s name and photograph along with a copy of the Care Plan and any other information required for that specific child. Epipens are stored in this central point so that all staff know where to come and quickly access them in the event of an emergency. For some children it might be appropriate for additional epipens to be held in their classroom.
- It is the parent’s responsibility to make sure that inhalers and epipens are in date and working correctly and you are welcome to come in and check them at any time.
- Children who have an epipen / inhaler must have them in school at all times and it is parent’s responsibility to ensure that this is the case. They must be taken on school trips, no matter how short the trip is.
Sickness and diarrhoea – 48 hour absence policy.
If your child has sickness and / or diarrhoea they must be kept off school for 48 hours from the last occurance, even if they appear fit and well. This is to try and minimise the spread to other children and also members of staff.
Administering ‘Short Course’ Medication to Children in School.
If at all possible medicines are to be given by parents and carers. They should come to the school office and a member of staff will collect the child from class.
- If it is not possible for the parent or carer to come to school they can make a request for the medication to be given to the child by an adult in school. This request should be made to the class teacher. In this instance school will administer medicine prescribed by the doctor if the dosage is 4 or more times a day.The parent is required to complete a consent form at the school office.
- All medicines are to be taken to the office and they will be kept either there or if necessary, in the fridge designated for storing medicines until it is time for the child to have the medicine.
- Only medicines prescribed by a doctor or dentist can be taken by a child in school.
- The name, class and dosage should be clearly visible on the container in which the medicine was dispensed by the pharmacist.
- Parents are asked not to send ‘over the counter’ medicines to school.
- At all times parents and carers are responsible for administering medicine.
